Dear Mary Peltola,
You may be aware of this bill that passed in the Senate, the sunshine protection act. I have some concerns about this bill that I want to share with you. I think you should vote no on this. Here are my reasons why.
1: Health experts say that we are biologically more adept to standard time. We have lots of data that supports this. Is there any research done that supports the health benefits of transitioning to permanent daylight savings?
2: Daylight savings time was implemented for war-time emergencies, why make it permanent? We shouldn’t rely on decisions that were made quickly and under duress. Alaska and Hawaii weren’t states then and operate time very differently from the rest of the lower 48.
3: Another reason why people supported daylight savings time was to conserve energy. Nowadays people are using energy 24/7. Back then it would have been a great system. But today, a good portion of our population is still active overnight.
4: Now to my final point, a large part of the argument for this bill is about children going to school in daylight. Many schoolchildren also do extracurricular activities before and after school and their parents take advantage of before and after-school care. Because of the modern-day school and work schedule, the idea of changing the clock for school and children is outdated.
Don’t vote on this bill. If the reasons aren’t enough, here is my number and email if you want to talk.
