Dear Senator Lisa,
In this letter to you, I’d like to let you know how concerned I am about women’s rights in general and their access to reproductive health care in particular once Roe v. Wade was overturned on June 24, 2022. As a woman, I’m urging with you to maintain the legality of abortion in Alaska and protect the rights of all Alaskan women.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, it was up to the state governments to decide whether or not abortion access would be allowed in their states. Women’s lives will be put even more in jeopardy by Alaska’s abortion restriction. It is outrageous to restrict a woman’s ability to choose her own healthcare decision in light of her unique circumstances. If a man’s rights were in play, there would be no discussion. There are hundreds of reasons why abortions are performed, but the safety of the pregnant person is the most important factor. Any valid and necessary justification for an abortion in that circumstance, regardless of the reason.
Not only are people’s lives at risk, but prohibiting abortions will also force Alaskans to leave the state and find healthcare elsewhere. Given that the next state is over 3,000 miles away, many could not afford the trip. Can you picture having to travel outside of your state if you reside in one of the many rural villages? Being that far from the lower 48 would be a tipping point for many people given the high cost of living, gas, and groceries, as well as the already high cost of living.
I am aware of the demanding positions each of you holds and I encourage you to work to keep abortions legal within the state of Alaska. I appreciate you taking the time to read my letter and for working to uphold people’s rights.
Sincerely,
Haley Sielak
