Disney Bill of Rights – YouTube
This clip is a great way to incorporate the fun of Disney into the foundations of American Politics. Each clip shows a scene from various Disney movies, and how they relate to each amendment from the Bill of Rights. It is easy for students to memorize which amendment is which or tell you what it’s about, but the Disney scenes are a great way to see these rights in action. For example, the Second Amendment clip shows Merida (If she was in the U.S.) using her right to bear arms. I love this video because it is a great example of these amendments without being very basic. Tangled doesn’t allow Finn to stay in her tower, this is not just a basic video of someone not allowing a soldier into their private home. The Bill of Rights was extremely important in the foundation of the United States. This document was a way for citizens to know their rights that the government must follow. Since the Constitution was not welcomed by all, this gave away for the citizens to trust that the Government would be following the laws in place and there were legally binding documents to back them. It is important to have a strong understanding of not only the meanings of each amendment but the purpose of creating the Bill of Rights.
- What Example is used to show the Second Amendment?
- Why was the Bill of Rights important?
- Who was the Bill of Rights made to protect and represent?
- If asked to make changes, would you change or add to the Bill of Rights? Why or why not? What would you add?
- Can you think of another T.V. example to show freedom of speech? (Does not have to be Disney)
As an Education Major, I love the opportunity to create lessons for students. This is a great way for us to kind of show what stuck with us during the previous lessons and have a little fun with it. The only recommendation I would have is making the focus be on making an activity for the students. Previously, I’ve had teachers make us create YouTube channels to present our work and we made activities for our “Students” and shared the activity and lesson with the class.
